HER UNTOLD STORY PROJECT

Unfading and insightful everyday women

Will you be one of my Untold Story voices?

I have been in the process of capturing the footage off an old recorder tape of my late grandmother. A much younger me recorded her as we dialogued about her life. There is a deeper desire to capture omitted and under told narratives of everyday life, common history, and moments of our resilient nature.

Are everyday women’s stories underwritten, undervalued, and underestimated in our society? Many fascinating bits about grandmother I discovered long after she had passed. This desire grew to learn more about the ladies around me and to capture their story right now.

Taking the time to talk or write about oneself is not usually at the top of, or even on the list of things to do. There is a sensibility and intentionality necessary to  capture and preserve shared life experiences for the present and future generations.

Stories are our memory. They can become part of our identity and are our legacy.

The idea of a heroine is subjective and comes in all shapes, sizes, and pedigree. I desire to capture oral narratives from women in and around my life. I do not have to know you directly, but that you be willing to share a little life together over brief conversation.

I will archive these audio recording and will use them to create mixed media sound installations. Listening to the recording while painting will also inspire a series of abstract works of art.  The aim of this process is to expand our society’s narrative database and to create symbols of cultural and community heirlooms.

Mothers, sisters, aunties, girl friends, and grandmothers affect so much of our lives, our values, and are often our silent fortifying influence.

Yours is stories that should also be told.
